What Is Educational Software Development?
Educational software development is the process of building digital tools, learning management systems, e-learning platforms, virtual classrooms, assessment tools, or student information systems designed specifically for how schools, universities, or training programs teach and track learning. It's different from generic software development because it has to account for how people actually learn, how institutions are structured, and how student data needs to be handled and protected.
Most schools and EdTech companies start with an off-the-shelf LMS and eventually hit its limits: a workflow it doesn't support, a reporting need it can't meet, or an integration it can't make. That's usually the point where custom software development becomes the more practical option instead of stacking more workarounds onto software that wasn't built for the specific use case.
